Sketch of the apparatus used to determine experimentally the force between the magnet and a steel ball as a function of the separation. The amount of water was increased slowly and gently until the weight of the system bucket_ strap_steel ball surpassed the magnetic interaction of the ball with the magnet. After each trial the weight was determined with a balance.
