The measurement setup for the force applied by magnets on a single steel ball. The ball is suspended above the magnets, which are attached to weights. The reciprocal force working on the magnets reduce the weight displayed on the scale, allowing for calculation of the magnetic force as a function of the difference in displayed weight. Themethod by which the ball was suspended in this image is the one we used for very small distances (d < 3 mm) between theball and the magnets.
